Cloud 9 - Siargao Island, Surigao Del Norte - The Surfing Capital of the Philippines

Background

Siargao is known for its superb surfing which ranked top 8th best surf spot worldwide..

This long wooden structure serves as a viewing deck and walk way to the surf break of the famous Cloud 9. This is where the surfers take off before hitting the water and touch down after getting stoked.

You have never been to Siargao if you haven't seen or walked in the boardwalk.

Generally, the best months for surf in this area are August through to the beginning of November. This is when we get the most typhoon swells and the best winds. During May, June, and July, the surf is generally smaller. BUT when it's on the conditions are ideal. A bit of a gamble at this time of year though. From December to April the winds are often strong and cross shore, BUT the swell is always pretty big and some surfers prefer this time of year. The high season is in September & October at which time several competitions are being held; such as the national and Siargao regional Surfing competition as well as the body board competition.

Why Siargao is the Surfing Capital of the Philippines?

The sea bed drops to 500 meters, then to 1500 meters just a mile off Tuason Point and the reef. Thirty miles from General Luna (GL), it is 10,000 meters deep (that is Mt. Everest plus another 3,000 feet). Typhoons in season pass GL to the north east, and they bring the big waves in from the deep water.

This is where we rented our surfboard. There were other stores near Sagada Resort that offers sulf lesson, surfboard and guides. The Very Good Nice was suggested by our Surfing Instructor (sorry I forgot his name :] ) and it is distance away from the beach.

He recommended us the soft-top and long board because its best choice for beginner. Though its heavy, I think it'll be more comfortable and easy for balance and do maneuvers.  Basically he taught us lessons that include paddling, duck diving, catching a wave, positioning and more. The rental rate/hr of each board is P500.00(with surfing instructor) and P200.00 (surf board only).

We paddled around the sea though there's lot of physical work involved. Getting up on board, do balance and maneuvers was not easy.

well done

Safety should always be at the back of your mind. For example, you should never be surfing alone. You never know what might go wrong even on the smallest of waves, and it's good to have someone who can help you out should you get into trouble.

The sun drowned in the horizon, it's rays of light glimmering in the darkness of the clouds faded.

During Low Tide

This is the special place i want to stay longer, where i can imagine myself going back over and over again..
